Paint etching is damage that goes into your clear coat instead of sitting on top of it. Light etching can usually be polished away. Deep etching is permanent, and it takes a lot less than people think for etching to count as deep.
Bugs and water spots cause almost all of the etching I see. They get there differently, but they leave the same kind of damage behind.
What Paint Etching Actually Is
Think of it as a crater in the clear coat. If we zoomed in on an etched hood, it would look like the surface of the moon.
That picture matters because of how the fix works. You cannot fill a crater. To make it go away, the entire surface around it has to be brought down to the lowest point of that crater. Everything above the bottom of the deepest pit comes off, across the whole area.
Clear coat is thin. There is not much of it to work with in the first place.
So a crater does not have to be big to be a problem. It only has to be deep.
How Bugs Etch Paint
The question I get most is how long bugs can sit before they leave a mark. There is no answer to that. Anybody who gives you a number of hours is guessing.
What I can tell you is who is at the highest risk: any vehicle with no protection on it. That includes brand new ones. I regularly see etching on cars with under 100 miles on them.
Some surfaces get it worse than others. Black paint is at the top of the list. Plastic panels, like bumpers and mirror caps, are right there with it. And a vehicle that lives outside with nothing on the paint is taking the full hit every single day.
There is one piece of good news for new owners. A brand new vehicle has the best chance of having its etching polished away, because nothing has been taken off that clear coat yet.
Water Spot Etching Is the Same Damage
Water spots make the same small craters, just by a different route.
Water carries minerals. When a drop evaporates, the water leaves and the minerals stay behind. Over time they work their way down into the clear coat, and a spot that was sitting on the surface becomes a spot that is part of it.
Rain is a big one here, obviously. But nothing is more harmful than sprinklers. If your truck is parked where the lawn sprinklers reach it, that is the worst spot on your property for it. Move the truck or move the sprinkler head.
The difference between a spot and an etched spot is the whole game. Light water spots are still sitting on top, and those can be removed chemically with ease. Once the minerals have worked their way in, you are back to craters, and craters mean polishing.
Fixing Paint Etching, and When It Is Too Deep
Light etching can typically be polished away rather easily. Often it goes further than that, and we have to wet sand the area first and then polish it.
It does not take much for etching to be too deep.
Sometimes it is deep enough that yes, technically, it could be polished away. But you would be left with no clear coat remaining. I will not make that trade on your vehicle. I would rather you live with a mark you can see in direct sun than have me take the paint somewhere it cannot come back from.
All of this happens during the correction stage before a coating goes on, and how much of it a vehicle needs is part of why coating prices move with the condition of the paint.
Does Ceramic Coating Stop Paint Etching?
No. It buys time.
How much time depends on too many factors to list honestly. Heat, sun exposure, and how long the mess is left sitting are the big ones.
The coating does an excellent job fighting back. It gives the paint a solid chemical barrier, so whatever lands on the vehicle is attacking the coating first instead of your clear coat. That is a real advantage and it is a big part of why I recommend coatings down here.
But if it is ignored, even a coated car can be etched. A coating is not permission to leave lovebugs on the hood for two weeks. It pays to be proactive, which is most of what I said about how long a coating actually lasts too.
Why the Gulf Coast Is Hard on Paint
Everything that causes etching is turned up here. We get an afternoon shower, the sun comes back out, and whatever water is left on the hood dries right where it sat. Lovebug season puts acidic bugs on every grille and mirror in the county, then the heat bakes them on before you get home.
None of that is something you can avoid by being careful. Whether you park in Gulf Shores or up in Daphne, some water is going to dry on your vehicle after a rain, and some bugs are going to sit longer than you meant them to. The goal is not perfection. It is not letting any of it stay there.
What to Do When You Find Bugs or Water Spots
The best defense against water spots is a coating. I am a coating shop, so weigh that however you want, but it is also just true.
Past that:
- Avoid sprinklers at all cost. This one matters more than anything else on the list.
- Try to never let water dry on the vehicle. If you wash it, dry it. Every time.
- Take care of light water spots early. They come off chemically with ease while they are still on the surface.
- Never let bugs bake on the paint. Blast them off with water or just wash the vehicle. A quick rinse tonight beats a perfect wash on Saturday.

If Your Vehicle Is Already Coated
Drying a coated vehicle is immeasurably easier and faster than drying one that is not. Water does not hang on the way it does on bare clear coat, so a good drying towel or a blower gets the job done quickly and safely. That matters, because drying is the step people skip, and skipped drying is where water spots come from.
Use good quality soaps without additives that stick around on the surface. You want the soap to clean the coating and rinse away, not leave something behind on top of it.
And remember what the coating is doing for you. It is buying you time. It is not asking you to stop paying attention.
